About .NET Framework 3.5

The .NET Framework is the brand name for a set of modern technologies designed to be the next-generation Windows development platform. .NET Framework 3.5 is designed to enhance the use of the .NET 3.0 technologies and speed-up the application development for building connected systems without the need for developers to learn new programming paradigms.

.NET Framework contains four building blocks:

  • Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), formerly known as Indigo, for building service-oriented applications.
  • Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), formerly known as Avalon, for providing rich, modern, composable UI.
  • Windows Workflow Foundation (WF), formerly known as Windows Orchestration Engine, for capturing business or process execution flow and transforming that into code and state machines.
  • Windows CardSpace (WCS), formerly known as InfoCard, for providing multiple security identities across credentials providers, sites, applications and users.
